LAST GAMES OF THE SEASON - SUNDAY 15 APRIL
WILD CATS The National Volleyball League came to a close last weekend. Newbridge Volleyball Club went out in a bang of excitement, using the day as an opportunity to bring friends and family together to support both the Wildcats and Cheetahs, with music and refreshments to keep everyone in good spirits. Kildare TV was there to capture the teams in action.
The Wildcats were up against Santry, a team who they beat with ease earlier this season. It seemed though that a win wouldn’t come so easy on this day, as the energy in the hall created nerves amongst the Wildcats, which was very evident when they took to the court in the first set. Unforced errors plagued their game, so the Wildcats struggled to get ahead. They lost the first set 25-19.
Coach Landers tried to instil some confidence in his team as they began the second set. They managed to cut down on unforced errors on receive of service which made a significant difference to the run of the set. The Wildcats maintained their lead throughout, winning the set comfortably 25-17.
Despite winning a set, nerves began to creep back into the Wildcats’ play in the third set. They led for the first half of the set and when Santry had a few good points, the Wildcats’ play turned erratic, causing unforced errors. Fortunately consistent attacking by Pimairam got the Wildcats out of tough spots when it was needed, helping the team to race to the finish for a 25-22 score.
It seemed that any drive that the Santry team had was crushed in the fourth set. Still energetic, the Wildcats ploughed their way through the set confidently, winning it 25-16. It was a 3-1 victory for the Wildcats and more importantly, it was a win that helped the Wildcats to seal their place as SECOND in the First Division Volleyball League. It was a fantastic result for the Wildcats, who have gone from strength to strength this season, with fine young players showing great skill for the future. Team: Winders(C), Miley(L), Pimairam, Ditrich, Flis, Goulding, Labudda, Wnek, Cioara, Langrell, Lalowicz, Low.
CHEETAHS The Cheetahs were up against Garda in the women’s second division volleyball league. Garda were vying for the winning position in the league and needed to win this game to secure their position. So Garda came out fighting. In contrast the Cheetahs were very complacent, letting the game pass them by in the first two sets, losing them 25-13, 25-7. It wasn’t until the third set that the Cheetahs started to work together and scrambled, dived and fought for points until they won the set 28-26. It was an exciting set yet it seemed to be the beginning and end of the Cheetahs. The Garda came back in the fourth, winning the set 25-11, uncontested by the Cheetahs. Garda won the game 3-1, Players: O’Donnell (C), Cummins (L), Higgins, Herbert, Whyte, Curley, Stephens, Brady.
